About H E I D I L E E:

Recipient of the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute’s Accessory Design Award 2012, H E I D I L E E is an avant-garde couture designer and artist that currently works and lives in New York City. Her work challenges and summons the viewer on a universal level, as if a mythological mind/storyteller walks among us now. Not just borrowing

from past aesthetics, she builds on a cosmology that links the modern world with our past. Her and her hats have been featured in VOGUE, ELLE, W, MTV, NYT, The Creators Project, etc.

Connecting with the Classical » “But the Black Concert that she and Nouveau Classical presented at Le Poisson Rouge on Valentine’s Day 2011 was pretty sexy. The music was Britten, Schubert, Hugo Wolf and Shostakovich and Mr. Gureckis’s, with costuming by H E I D I L E E, the art milliner known for her cerebral, semiotics-sprouting hats and headpieces. Beneath their headgear, the performers, tightly clad in black lace over nude body stockings, looked like black valentines, which Ms. Lee said reinforced “the music’s themes of death, melancholy and darkness.

Last spring Nouveau Classical and Ms. Lee teamed up again, on “Wearing the Lost Generation, a Musical Sartorial Salon,” part of the monthlong celebration of Gertrude Stein at Symphony Space. “Sugar’s work gives resonance to my pieces,” Ms. Lee said, “it gives them a narrative.” She also admires Ms. Vendil’s desire to startle traditional audiences for classical music and use fashion to bring in new ones. “I feel like the kind of music her group plays is underrated. It’s important not just to look at the zeitgeist of now. Sugar’s choices trigger parts of your brain that music of this day doesn’t.” -Celia McGee.
